A Back to Boundary Fee is an additional charge that may apply to taxi trips in Queensland when your trip ends outside a taxi fleet’s service area.
This fee helps ensure drivers are fairly compensated for the extra distance they must travel to return to their service area.
How the Fee Works?
Trips ending more than 40km outside the service area:
An additional $1.00 per kilometre is added for each kilometre beyond the service area boundary.
The distance is calculated using the shortest practicable route to your destination.
Areas north of the Tropic of Capricorn:
The same $1.00 per kilometre fee applies, but it can be charged for trips that end less than 40km outside the service area.
Fare Type
Trips that include a Back to Boundary Fee must be run on the meter (not a Fixed Price fare).
The meter fare covers the trip to your destination.
The Back to Boundary Fee is manually added at the end of the trip.
This ensures the correct total is charged, as Fixed Price fares do not automatically include this extra amount.
Important Notes
Drivers may not always request the Back to Boundary Fee, but they are entitled to do so under Queensland Taxi Regulations.
The fee ensures drivers are compensated for returning to their service area, during which they cannot pick up new passengers.
Example: If your trip ends 50km outside the fleet’s service area, the Back to Boundary Fee would be $10.00 (10km × $1.00).
